Material Conversations
Material Conversations was a two-person exhibition with textile artist and sculptor Holly Hill, a fellow MFA candidate and someone whose approach to materials I recognize even when our work is different. We both listen to what our materials want to do. We both follow that conversation wherever it leads.
This work marks the beginning of my pulp painting practice at scale. Making large sheets of abaca paper on a four foot mould outdoors, and building images with pulp rather than on top of it, I discovered something I’ve been developing ever since. Most visitors assumed I had painted on the finished paper. I hadn’t. The pulp was always the paint.
These pieces are quieter than what came after. But the conversation they started is still going.
